On July 9th-11th, LCPS student, Lila Sanchez, of Picacho Middle School, attended the 2023 Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Children’s Congress in Washington, D.C. The goal of the event is to raise awareness about Type 1 Diabetes and to let congress and other federal decision makers know how essential they are in advancing research, ensuring access to affordable insulin, and helping the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation achieve its vision of a world without type 1 diabetes. Lila was selected to represent New Mexico from nearly 800 applicants. Lila was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of eight years old. Today, she is a youth advocacy leader. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from the foods they eat. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, called beta cells. While its causes are not entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved. The onset of type 1 diabetes has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. Currently, there is nothing you can do to prevent type 1 diabetes, and—at present—nothing you can do to get rid of it. That is why Lila and her mother have been part of the “Remember Me” campaign, and have spoken with members of congress with hopes to enact change. Since 2019, Lila’s father has sponsored a county commission proclamation for national diabetes awareness month. Over the summer, Lila traveled to Washington D.C. to present in front of federal lawmakers about type 1 diabetes. There, she advocated for more diabetes research and lower insulin prices. Her type 1 diabetes role models inspire her: Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, and former Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Delegate and American Ninja Warrior, Katie Bone. Lila met Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor at her book signing for her book “Just Ask! Be Different, Be Kind, Be You.” She considers that day, the experience of a lifetime. In July, the LCPS Board of Education recognized Lila for her courage and leadership, advocating for change and helping the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s mission to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat Type 1 Diabetes and its complications.
