Carnegie Learning focuses on a blended learning approach, learning together through the use of consumable textbooks and learning individually through the use of MATHia software. The learning together piece makes up 60% of the program and learning individually is the remaining 40% of the program.
Learning Together: Students are provided a consumable textbook where there is space for writing, sketching, drawing, cutting, pasting, and constructing new mathematical ideas. Through the consumable textbooks, students work in groups, not only to develop math skills, but to learn how to collaborate, create, communicate, and problem-solve. They will apply math to real-world situations so that they can see why it’s meaningful.
During the learning together portion, students also engage in an instructional approach composed of three components: engage, develop, demonstrate. In the engage part of the lesson, students' thinking is activated by tapping into prior knowledge and real-world experiences. The develop portion builds deep mathematical understanding through collaboration and questioning. Lastly, students demonstrate understanding by reflecting and evaluating what was learned.
Learning Individually: Through MATHia, students receive 1-to-1 adaptive math tutoring, providing a personalized learning path and ongoing formative assessment. MATHia does this by providing just-in-time support along with tracking student progress based on skills so that students engage with the right content they need to become proficient with mathematics.
Homework Help: When assisting with homework, you can support your student’s learning by asking questions about the work they do. Here are some helpful questions to ask:
● How does this problem look like something you did in class?
● Can you show me the strategy you used to solve this problem? Do you know another way to solve it?
● Does your answer make sense? Why?
● Is there anything you don’t understand? How can you use today’s lesson to help?
Additionally, you can use LiveHint (livehint.com) to help support your students when they are engaging with the textbook assignments.
