K-12 Mathematics

Who We Are

The Las Cruces Public Schools K-12 Mathematics Team, as part of the Teaching and Learning Center, is committed to supporting and empowering our teachers so that all students can engage in meaningful mathematics learning through individual and collaborative experiences that promote their ability to make sense of mathematical ideas and reason mathematically. Our team supports a research-based balanced approach to mathematics, building procedural fluency on a strong foundation of conceptual understanding. We believe that mathematics learning should focus on developing deep understanding through problem solving, reasoning, and discourse by exploring and solving contextual mathematical problems. The math team provides high quality individualized teacher and school support.

The Foundation of Teaching and Learning Mathematics K-12

Las Cruces Public Schools utilizes the landmark publication from National Council of Teachers of Mathematics , Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All (PtA) as the foundation for teaching and learning mathematics. In Principles to Actions, NCTM reveals a set of strongly recommended, research-based principles and teaching practices for teachers of the mathematics classroom.

New Mexico Public Education Department Mathematics Guiding Documents

Recently, the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) developed two guiding documents to support mathematics teaching and learning across the State. In addition to PtA, LCPS utilizes the New Mexico Mathematics Instructional Scope and the New Mexico Mathematics Framework to support high quality, research-based teaching and learning.

The PED has adopted the Common Core State Standards for K-12 Mathematics.  Click here for additional information.

K-5 Mathematics

In the 2020-2021 school year LCPS adopted new math instructional materials for Kindergarten through 5th grade, called i-Ready Classroom Mathematics. This resource supports the individual needs of each student by administering a Diagnostic assessment at the Beginning, Middle and End of the year that provides a picture of a student’s strengths and areas of support in four Math Domains. In addition to the Diagnostic assessment, the program also includes Student Worktexts that contain students’ lessons and additional practice, as well as online materials for students’ practice and differentiation.

Your child’s math class may look and feel a little differently than it has in years past. With i-Ready Classroom Mathematics:

·      Lessons span approximately one week

·      each day is a Session centered around a single, powerful problem

·      Lessons start with an Explore Session, followed by 1-3 Develop Sessions, and end with 1-2 Refine Sessions

Below are some resources to help you become familiar with the program and learn how you can support your student in learning math at home.

·      Watch this video to learn about the i-Ready Classroom Mathematics program and get answers to the most common questions families ask about the program.

·      Read this resource to get to know the i-Ready Classroom Mathematics program and learn how you can support your student at home.

·      Visit the i-Ready Classroom Mathematics Family Center for additional support.

Secondary Mathematics

Carnegie Learning focuses on a blended learning approach, learning together through the use of consumable textbooks and learning individually through the use of MATHia software. The learning together piece makes up 60% of the program and learning individually is the remaining 40% of the program.

Learning Together: Students are provided a consumable textbook where there is space for writing, sketching, drawing, cutting, pasting, and constructing new mathematical ideas.  Through the consumable textbooks, students work in groups, not only to develop math skills, but to learn how to collaborate, create, communicate, and problem-solve. They will apply math to real-world situations so that they can see why it’s meaningful.

During the learning together portion, students also engage in an instructional approach composed of three components: engage, develop, demonstrate. In the engage part of the lesson, students' thinking is activated by tapping into prior knowledge and real-world experiences. The develop portion builds deep mathematical understanding through collaboration and questioning. Lastly, students demonstrate understanding by reflecting and evaluating what was learned.

Learning Individually: Through MATHia, students receive 1-to-1 adaptive math tutoring, providing a personalized learning path and ongoing formative assessment. MATHia does this by providing just-in-time support along with tracking student progress based on skills so that students engage with the right content they need to become proficient with mathematics.

Homework Help: When assisting with homework, you can support your student’s learning by asking questions about the work they do. Here are some helpful questions to ask:

●      How does this problem look like something you did in class?

●      Can you show me the strategy you used to solve this problem? Do you know another way to solve it?

●      Does your answer make sense? Why?

●      Is there anything you don’t understand? How can you use today’s lesson to help?

Additionally, you can use LiveHint (livehint.com) to help support your students when they are engaging with the textbook assignments.  LiveHint is Carnegie Learning's live textbook assistant which allows students to obtain real-time hints on practice problems contained in the textbook assignments through a Conversational ChatBot (TutorBot) from any device. With LiveHint, students and parents never have to navigate through textbook assignments on their own.

Home Connection: By visiting Carnegie Learning’s Home Connection, you can review more information regarding program resources, program approach, MATHia support, and other ideas for supporting math learning at home.
