What are Pathways?

We are a very unique elementary school because we offer specialized educational courses that enable students to take advantage of additional resources and innovative techniques that focus on the special talents and interests of our students. The typical elementary school curriculum is enhanced with an unparalleled selection of specialized courses designed to challenge and motivate students with unique talents and interests.  In addition, the pathway program provides enrichment opportunities and field trips throughout the year.

We are the Columbia Explorers and we know that students love to explore to increase their learning.  Therefore, we will offer Exploration courses.  The difference between Exploration and Pathway courses is that the pathway courses are designed with a six-year scope and sequence. This means that students in the pathway courses will begin in kindergarten and remain in those pathway courses until 5th grade.

Exploration courses will change by semester.  These courses are designed for students who would like to sample many different options.  Exploration classes are taught by classroom teachers.  Future exploration courses may include: Cooking, Growth Mindset, Gardening, Basic Drawing, Mystery Science, Poetry, and Yearbook.

Columbia Elementary School is the only school that provides pathway courses in STEM, piano, and language and culture.  These 45-minute courses twice a week allow for in-depth, inquiry-based studies.  We also provide our students with extended classroom experiences such as field trips, guest speakers, and project-based learning which enhance the daily academic curriculum.  Finally, our students have the opportunity to interact with and gain knowledge from professionals in a variety of fields.

If you are interested in one of our Pathway or Exploration courses, you will need to apply.  Any elementary school student in Las Cruces is eligible to apply.  Contact Columbia's school registrar, (575) 527-1561 for more information about signing your student up for their selected pathway program.

*Although any student can apply, we do ask students to maintain certain requirements to remain in the program.

*Currently, busing is only provided for students that live in the Columbia School district.  Families outside of the school district will have to provide their own transportation.
